POLITICS: Substance v. Likeability

Diane Keaton, Jason Alexander, Pierce Brosnan, Rob Reiner, Kerry Washington and Stevie Wonder were some of the stars at the Democratic presidential debate. Both Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton tried to define the narrow distinction they had on policies like immigration, health care and tax relief in their first one-on-one debate. The most notable of their differences were on Health care and the Iraq war. Clinton wants universal healthcare (mandatory healthcare for all), while Barack supports mandatory healthcare for children. On Iraq, they both agree to bring the troops back but Hillary will probably take a longer time to do so, while Barack seems to want to get out immediately and leave Iraq in the mess America created. The two were much more civil as I think Hillary realized that attacking Barack will deem her a racist by those who don't seem to understand what politics is about. In all, Clinton brought policy and plans, while Barack preached hope and the future.

A DETAILED ANALYSIS

I think Barack preached more than hope and the future. I think he touched on some substantive differences between their strategies with respect to international relations, health care, and the iraq war; and I think he outlined his plans rather clearly.

I don't think Hillary necessarily attacked him personally in a racist way, but she certainly had her husband out there doing it; and I lost a lot of respect for Bill Clinton during this campaign. The most blatant racial attack was comparing Obama to Jesse Jackson--he was trying to say that SC didn't mean anything--well he could have pointed to John Edwards winning SC in 2004--or any other comparison--but he chose to interject race into it.

But all in all, I think both candidates performed very well last night and I think voters have a tough decision to make, if they haven't already made one.

i think hillary won the debate.

Obama's highpoints were the Iraq war. on that issue he beat hillary. she cannot wiggle her way out of voting to authorize bush to invade iraq. the quicker she accepts that as a defeat the more she can get over that question. also bill's involvement in her campaign does not seem to have helped her at all. but i'm not so sure that it is hurting her as much as some may think.

i agree that she gave a more comprehensive summary of the important issues and what she intends to do to resolve them. having done so she came off as more knowledgeable and prepared for the task ahead. but this comes with years of experience. the negative, however, is that she tends to run on and can sometimes lose a listener. especially when she talke about healthcare.

i think Obama needed to do more than coast in this debate. and he needed to win this debate to have a chance at winning super tuesday. as a result i predict hillary will win the ticket when all is said and done.

overall, i think either democratic candidate would do a good job.
